ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)

This page will explain the advantages of ADSL. It will also point out what you need and the steps to follow to obtain ADSL.

ADSL is fast, reliable and very cost effective. It is a permanent connection which means no time wasted while waiting for the modem to connect. In a network environment, all PC’s can be configured to use the same ADSL connection simultaneously.

The greatest advantage probably is that the cost is not linked to the time you spend on the internet, rather the amount of combined data uploaded and downloaded. You subscribe for a certain amount of data for every month. Much like a cell phone contract’s free minutes. The amount of unused data does not carry over to the following month though. Once the cap is reached you will be disconnected until more data is requested, at a price obviously.

In a nutshell, ADSL is fast with a fixed monthly cost as long as you keep to the subscribed monthly data amount.

What you need:

  • ADSL telephone line conversion
  • ADSL modem
  • ADSL powered Internet Service Provider

Steps to follow:

    • Contact Telkom to find out if you fall under the ADSL covered area. All they need is your telephone number. If not go to 3G/GPRS Internet or Dial-up Internet. If you are indeed in a covered area, decide on the speed of the connection you want and apply at telkom for the conversion. The faster the connection, the more it will cost.
    • Get an ADSL modem. Telkom provide modems for free on certain contracts, though we have found these to be very unreliable, as they reset for no apparent reason. Contact us for a more stable option or visit our accessories section on the Hardware page for more info. We sell modems that will suit your every need.
    • Ask Telkom for an estimated time of installation and arrange with us to create an ADSL account for you. Specify the amount of data you will need every month. 3GB is the most popular, however, we do offer various packages. We will do the setup at your premises after the conversion from Telkom is done.
